Why come in to the sector?
The construction sector is central to the UK economy, generating almost 9% of UK gross domestic product (GDP) with a turnover of more than £203 billion a year and is growing in social and economic importance. It employs 2.5 million people and requires a further 87,600 new entrants a year to 2011, as forecast by the Construction Skills Network.
These new entrants will meet the skills gap created by the Government’s spending programme over the next five years across education, housing, infrastructure and the Olympics. Government, together with the industry, are fully committed to improving standards and developing a world class construction industry and this is reflected in the funding made available for vocational qualifications.
